What is "lean"?  Lets start with what lean isn't.  Lean isn't a system,  or a  program.  Lean is an idea - a way of looking at things, you might say.  It is based on the elimination of waste, with waste defined as anything that does not "add" value".  The customer determines which steps/activities add value,  and which just add cost and time.

     By embracing the lean idea,  Sterling Press & Packaging Inc. has been able to improve turnaround times and largely absorb the ever-increasing cost of raw materials and transport.
